About Us

AsseTrac was co-founded in 2018 by two Minnesota natives with over 40 years of experience in the construction industry. Working with linear infrastructure projects such as transmission lines, pipelines and railways our founders experienced the complexities of managing assets across projects that spanned hundreds of miles. At the center of this struggle was the management of access mats, which are used to make temporary roads on project sites.

2018

The desire to improve the planning, management, regulatory compliance, and costs of access mats resulted in the formation of AsseTrac and the asset tracking hardware-as-a-service product, MaTrac.

MaTrac wasn’t born in a lab, it was developed on linear infrastructure project construction sites. Testing multiple technologies such as RFID, GPS, Bluetooth, and others they found that solution needed to be built with abuse in mind and that it needed to be embedded within the access mats.  In 2018, the founders partnered with an engineering firm to begin building MaTrac Bluetooth beacons and the Cellular Gateways.

Initially, the MaTrac Bluetooth beacons were housed within a 3D printed shell to test the viability of this solution. What the founders determined is that the technology worked very well in the access mats and that the 3D printed shell needed to be strengthened to stand up to the abuse of a construction site.

2019

By 2019, updated rugged beacons were again tested in a pilot project where we validated that both the technology and the devices worked well on the project site. As AsseTrac was about to offer the MaTrac solution to the marketplace in 2020, the global COVID pandemic began. The entire AsseTrac business was placed on-hold during the pandemic, and would not start again until chips became readily available.

2024

Fast forward to 2024, when AsseTrac with the same focus and a renewed energy to reduce the cost and headaches for subcontractors, energy companies, and rail companies. MaTrac Bluetooth beacons were then updated to the latest, more energy efficient hardware while the software was updated to the latest versions. A team was built, a marketing plan was hatched, and AsseTrac secured our first MaTrac customer.

Because of our history, we like to think of AsseTrac as an old, new company. The MaTrac was proven to be valuable long before it was built, because of our founders experience working on linear infrastructure projects. The technology has also had considerable time to harden and prove that there is longevity in the product, with some of the 2019 Bluetooth beacons still working today. At the time we thought of the pandemic as a hardship, but it may be more of a blessing allowing us to prove the value over several years.
